Big vintage jar from the Seventies, with glossy glaze and a slender, elegant rooster image painted by hand on it. The glaze has produced a natural crackle effect over the years. It is perfect to decorate your kitchen.
The wide use of the image of the Rooster is to be traced back to ancient times, when it was considered a symbol for Mercury, the god of eloquence and of trade, identified as the messenger of the Sun. With the passing of time the rooster's pictorial representation kept evolving, until the end of XIX century, when it started to be multicoloured and in a stiff position. Luigi Motolese, an artist from Grottaglie, contributed to the success of the Rooster subject, representing it in increasingly innovative ways, by using different colours, such as turquoise, yellow and green. In the last few centuries the image of the rooster has acquired an apotropaic connotation: it was believed, as a matter of fact, that this animal could take away all evil influence and, therefore, that it was an important expression of fertility.
