Opals were already respected as particularly valuable gemstones in ancient times. They got a part of each stone from the gods after they had created the gems. Pliny the Elder therefore described the opal as follows: "It has the delicate fire of the carrot, the shiny purple of the amethyst, the magnificent sea green of the emerald, the golden yellow of the topaz, the deep blue of the sapphire, so that all the colors shine together in a wonderful mixture". According to Greek mythology, the tears of Zeus are held captive in the opal after the victory over the Titans. Opals were already considered healing stones at that time, as one of the strongest stones for the soul and for true love, since their pure observation alone does not miss its effect. Even in India it has long been known as a lucky charm and the Romans already mined it on the territory of today's Slovakia. The name of the opal probably comes from the ancient Indian Sanskrit where it was called "upala" for "gemstone". In ancient Greece it was called "opallios", and in ancient Rome "opalus". In addition to its lesser-known synonyms, it also has a variety of trade names. The opal also has an almost endless variety of varieties, which differ greatly from each other in terms of opalization, i.e. the unique play of colors typical of this stone. Therefore, the classification of opals from noble opals to common opals arose. The sites of opals are scattered all over the world, but Australia is one of the main suppliers with up to 95% of the total mining. Unfortunately, the best stones usually do not reach the European market, because they are very popular in Asia and achieve higher prices there.
Effect Opal
The opal exerts the greatest effect on us when viewed. Because their unique play of colors, which can show all the colors of nature, fascinates us and has a beneficial effect on our soul. In nature, there is only comparable in the wings of butterflies and hummingbirds. This opalization causes our feelings to be amplified. The opal can therefore make the viewer very happy by bringing him into harmony with himself. It thus increases the belief in oneself, as well as the will for self-realization, but also the associated acceptance, sense of community and the ability to communicate. Because if you are satisfied with yourself, you also feel comfortable in company. This is also the reason why the opal can help to find true love. Depression can also be alleviated by it. The viewer becomes more open, more accommodating, but also strengthened in his opinion formation. But opals can also increase negative feelings, which is why they should not be considered too often or for a long time. One can also lose oneself in the colors of this stone, which can lead to life fatigue. You can also succumb to its beautiful shine, because it is not without reason that this gemstone is also considered the stone of thieves and spies. If negative feelings arise when looking at it, the stone should be removed immediately.
