In Greek mythology, Charon (or Charos in modern Greek) was the ferryman of Hades. He transported with his boat, the recently deceased from one bank of the river Acheron to the other, where according to mythology was the entrance of Hades. The dead had to pay Charon an obol for the fare. That is why in ancient Greece they always placed an obol under the tongue of the dead bodies before burying them so that the dead would have to pay Charon. Those who did not have to pay were doomed to wander the banks of Acheron for a hundred years.
Charon was the son of Erebus and Night. He pretended to be a whimsical, skeletal old man or a winged demon with a double hammer.
