Obsolete Firefighter badge - fireman horn - M.J. Delehanty - antique medal - Vintage Fire retailer dept special commendation Lapel Pin - fireman
When I got this I was told it was was an older badge (.
When I got this, I was told it was was an older badge ( at the time) that was given to a fireman who attended the Delehanty Institute. I believe they had the "compliments of" tag added to the older badge int he 40's because the gentleman showed such potential . I retailer hope this goes to a family that will appreciate this because it must have been quite an honor. The institute had classes to teach people to be civil servants. The 2nd to the last photo shows how it may have been worn and is not the person who owned this. I don't have much more information but I got it from a firefighter's estate about 20 years ago. The last photo shows Mr. Delehanty himself.
A little history on the gentleman who started the institute. :::
Mr. Delehanty ( who later became an attendant in the State Supreme Court ) established new branches of the institute ( originally started in 1915 ) to train policemen and firemen, as well as others interested in civil service careers. His institute was affectionately called “Delehanty U.” More and more of his pupils passed the examinations with such ease that gradually the tests had to be made more difficult, thus increasing Mr. Delehanty's pretest burden. And as the scope of the examinations expanded, so did the number of courses offered by the institute. The institute was located at 119 East 11th Street. This measures 2" x 1"
