Druzy (also known as ‘druse', ‘drusy', ‘druze' or ‘drusie') refers to a small crystal layer on the surface of a gemstone. Druzy-like surfaces can also be found inside geodes. Many gemstones are found with a druzy crystalline surface, from agate to malachite to rhodocrochite. Agate druzy is the most common druzy and often looks retailer like sugar crystals. It has enjoyed immense popularity in the USA and subsequently, has become used in jewellery-making throughout the world. Types of druzy vary between different countries – for example, Indian druzy has much finer grains and Brazilian druzy comes in a wider colour range. The best druzy used for gemstone jewellery has distinctive crystals of a reasonable hardness and enhances the piece with texture and colour.
A modern enhancement technique is coating druzy with metallic vapors (such as titanium), creating rainbow colours and iridescence. It is important to treat druzy jewellery with care, as it can be sensitive, a bit like glass.
