This is a one of a kind piece from a private collection of African Tribal and Contemporary Art. These unique pieces were discovered in villages and markets over a period of 20 years while living and traveling in Southern and Central Africa. All of the items that are part of this Tribal Art Collection are retailer at least 30 yrs old, and many of them date further back.
The Zulu hats or Isicholos, originated from Kwazulu Natal stronghold of the powerful Zulu nation of South Africa. Theses hats are traditionally worn by married women for ceremonial celebrations. Traditionally worn only by the married Zulu woman. The framework of the Zulu hat is made from woven grass or palm leaf fronds, this is then covered in fabric and trim or ethnic designs are added. They are hand woven from cotton or rope or vegetable fiber dyed with ochre and covered over a basket frame
