I was inspired to make this one-of-a-kind hamsa after I received one as a gift from a dear friend. I've been enamored of them ever since. Hamsa, from both Islamic and Jewish faiths, means 'five,' and is an abstract representation of an open right hand. Most have a variety of unique details and embellishments; here, I've included motifs of retailer a lotus flower for peace and tranquility, and fire for passion. In the center is also an eye.
The hamsa is usually worn as an amulet of protection, to ward off the 'evil eye.' When I wear them, I just feel safer. Guarded, even. It is also worn to bring blessings and good luck to the wearer.
There is no consensus as to whether the hamsa should be worn fingers up or fingers down. I chose to make this one pointing upward. To me, this is more positive, pointing to the sky.
This one is not a pendant for the bashful, but rather, a bold statement made for those who believe in its power. I fabricated this out of sterling silver, and oxidized it to give the outside a more antique effect, and to give the interior a bit of color (see the photos.)
The dimensions are 1 5/8" x 1 11/16" x 5/16" and can accommodate up to a 3mm cord or chain of your choice.
