In the book of James, he spelled out how his Christian readers had been living lives of worldly self-reliance, as many of us do at times. They had committed themselves to getting what they wanted at all costs, even to the point of fighting with other believers. They believed God, but they refused to trust Him to provide good for them and to accept that He was still providing good when He withheld what they wanted most.

How many times have retailer you heard the stance that if God cared..., or if God is in control...., or if God is all powerful...?
I personally have heard these if's, and before I was born again, I too was part of the if crowd of complainers not realizing because I had not had my heart and eyes open to the Truth in Jesus. Now, as a new creation through Christ Jesus, I understand that
God sees this type of thinking and behavior as adultery, cheating on Him with the world. He takes it personally. He opposes us in our pride when we live that way, but He is so rich in mercy that He doesn't reject us.

In the previous verse, James wrote that God gives more grace. He gives grace to the humble. My question is, how should we respond when we realize we've been on the world's path again? I believe that this verse reveals the beginning of James' answer: we are to submit to God again. Not easy to hear, but start by giving up getting what you want, and willingly receive all the good He gives. We must surrender our battles to achieve our own desires, and turn to serve others instead.

Yes, we must resist the devil. In chapter 3, and the verse above to which is so important, James revealed that this worldly wisdom we've been following is, in part, from the devil, God's enemy. Satan has been instrumental in engineering this system of self-service from the very beginning of human history. James clearly promises that, if we quit the path of the world ( the wide and easy path) and resist the devil, he will run away from us. Believe it!

Resistance requires us to actively pull away. Stand for God and His Son, Jesus Christ. This demands that we continually counter the devil's lies by telling ourselves the truth about our God's goodness, love, and power. Read God's Word every day. Learn it, live it, share it. The devil won't remain in the presence of our submission to the truth of God's Word. ~> Go ahead, and reread that... I believe that God allowed these statements to flow from me to you so strongly and with such directness for His Glory, He truly is in control over all! Hallelujah! <~
